How to Maintain Healthy Hair Between Salon Visits

Your stylist can only do so much — what you do at home matters just as much. Here are pro tips for keeping your hair healthy.

You just walked out of the salon with perfect hair. But how do you keep it looking great until your next appointment? Your at-home routine matters more than you think.

Use the Right Shampoo

Not all shampoos are created equal. If your hair is color-treated, use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo. For dry or damaged hair, look for moisturizing formulas with argan oil or keratin. Ask your stylist for specific product recommendations — they know your hair better than anyone.

Don't Overwash

Washing your hair every day strips it of natural oils. Most hair types do best with 2-3 washes per week. On off days, use dry shampoo at the roots to absorb oil and add volume. Your hair will actually look and feel better with less washing.

Heat Protection Is Non-Negotiable

If you use a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling wand, always apply a heat protectant spray first. Heat damage is cumulative and irreversible — the only fix is cutting it off. A good heat protectant is the cheapest insurance for your hair.

Sleep Smart

Switch to a silk or satin pillowcase. Cotton creates friction that causes frizz and breakage. A silk pillowcase keeps your hair smooth and can even extend your blowout by an extra day or two.

Get Regular Trims

Even if you're growing your hair out, get a trim every 8-12 weeks. Removing split ends prevents them from traveling up the hair shaft and causing more damage. A quarter-inch trim keeps your hair healthy and growing strong.
